Zammit, Josephine (1924-13.5.1988)

Co-ordinator of Maltese programmes in Australia

Zammit, a well-known personality for her work among the Maltese community in Australia, emigrated to Australia with her husband Charles Darmanin in 1952. She represented the Maltese Emigrants Commission in NSW.

In 1971 Zammit launched a Maltese radio show on Station 2CH and in 1975 she introduced Maltese language programmes on the newly-set-up 2EA Ethnic Radio. As a co-ordinator of the Maltese radio programme, she was one of the organizers of the concert held simultaneously in Malta and Sydney in September 1983, marking the first centenary of Maltese settlement in Australia.

In 1978 Zammit was made a member of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of her work among Maltese migrants. She died in South Stratfield, Australia.
