Vella, Diego (26.1.1930-18.5.1973)

Missionary

Born in Valletta, Vella studied at the Lyceum.

He entered the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor in 1945 and studied philosophy and theology at the Franciscan seminary, Malta. He was ordained priest in 1955.

A zealous missionary who worked in the Honduras (1960-73), Vella joined efforts with the founders of the newly-founded Catacamas High School. Much interested in the welfare of the Campesinos, he founded the Savings Cooperative and Credit Union and the Centro Santa Clara, which is an effort to reach the great mass of people through education and evangelization.

A trade union organizer, Vella was the chaplain of the local (Juticalpa) labour union and was very active in pastoral activity. He published several papers on trade unionism, including Huellas de Dio o la Cancion Moderna en la Cataquesis (Tegucigalpa D.C. , 1971)
