Vassallo, Paul (1938-)Professor of political science in WashingtonBorn in Marsa, Vassallo was educated at the Seminary and emigrated to the USA when he was 15 years old. A graduate in political science from Wayne State University, Vassallo obtained an MA from the University of Michigan in Library and Information Science and studied for a Ph.D. in political science. He has held a number of positions at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, including chief of the congressional reference division and chief of the national serials data programme. He was also professor of librarianship at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque for 14 years and associate vice-president for computer and information resources and technology. Vassallo is the head of the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC), a consortium of eight universities in the Washington DC area formed to pool their resources for a central library information centre. He joined the WRLC in 1988. The WRLC provide computerized on-line services, facilitating and enhancing access to library and information resources for the participating universities, their faculties, staffs and students. Vassallo has served in various capacities in local, regional, national, and international professional and civic organizations. These include membership of the board of trustees of the Association of Research Libraries and chairmanship of the board of directors of the AMIGOS Bibliographic Council, an on-line network connecting more than 800 academic, specialized and public libraries in the south west of the USA, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahama, and Arkansas. Vassallo was a member of the board of trustees of the New Mexico Symphonic Orchestra, a consultant to the Organization of American States and the partners of the Americas, assisting universities and libraries in Central America and Mexico, and served on an accreditation visiting team for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
