Portelli Dr John P.

Professor of Education

Professor in the Department of Theory and Policy Studies in Education, at the Ontario Institute for Education of the University of Toronto since 1999, has taught at Mount St. VincentUniversity, Halifax (1986-99), Dalhousie University (1985-86), and McGill University (1982-85).

Born in Mosta, and lived at Dingli, Malta, studied at St. Aloysisus College and at the University of Malta (B.A. 1975). After teaching for 2 years at Savio College, Dingli, Malta, he pursued graduate studies at McGill University from where he obtained an M.A.(1979) and

Ph.D.(1984) in philosophy. He has co-edited and/or co-authored five books in philosophy of education and education policy studies. His most recent publication is a co-edited book entitled The Erosion of Democracy in Education (2001, see: www.temerondetselig.com). He has authored several articles and presented at national and international conferences in the areas of philosophy of education, curriculum theory, education policy studies, and the Maltese in Canada.

Since 1996 he has pursued inter-disciplinary research (historical,sociological, educational) about the Maltese in Canada. He has interviewed over fifty Maltese-Canadians from Powell River, B.C. to Sydney, N.S. He continues to interview Maltese-Canadians and collect documents related to the immigration of Maltese to Canada and the Maltese experience in Canada.

He is currently writing a book about the Maltese in Canada.
