Pirotta, Edward (26.2.1939-11.11.1968)SculptorBorn in Naxxar, Pirotta started his artistic education in 1957 at the Malta School of Art under George Borg. He won a School of Arts scholarshop to Rome where he attended the Accademia di Belle Arti and studied under Michele Guerisi. He studied wood carving at the Istituto dell'Arte, ceramics under Melchiore Melis, and also attended La Scuola del Nudo dell'Associazione Artistica Intemazionale at Via Margutta. Pirotta participated in several exhibitions, including the Mostra dell'Accademia where he exhibited various female nudes, and where in 1959, he won the third prize. He also won the first prize in the Mostra della Messa (1959) and the Premio dell'Aula (1962) for the best foreign student. In 1961 Pirotta won a diploma and a silver medal from the Mostra Organizata dal Giomale d'Italia. Pirotta returned to Malta but in 1962 he migrated to London where he was employed as a designer for a textile firm, but also had his own artistic workshop. In 1965 Pirotta, together with Vilmo Gibello, were commissioned by the London Sunday Times Magazine to paint two black slaves in the 18th-century Venetian manner. Pirrotta's works were included in the collective exhibition 'Maltese Sculptures' held at the Gailerija Fenici in 1981. Pirrotta died tragically in a motorcycle accident in London.
