Griffiths, George Henry (1922-1998)Journalist/AuthorBorn in Senglea in 1922, George attended the Royal Navy Dockyard School. He served as an apprenticeship in Marine Engineering and a short term as a Measurer and Recorder of Works with the Admiralty. In 1948, he arrived in Australia together with his wife Josephine (nee Farrugia) and they settled in Sydney. For many years, George worked with the P&O Company and later became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. George had a flair for journalism and a good command of the English language. He was in fact the sub-editor and NSW correspondent of The Maltese News, a Melbourne-based monthly newsletter run by Paul Paris. In the late seventies, George wrote a series of articles in The Maltese Herald which he called Those Eventful Years. These illustrated articles highlighted the post-war contribution of many pioneer community leaders who played an important settlement role in shaping our community. Another positive contribution was the publication of a pictorial history of Maltese migration called Ir-Ritratt, which broke new ground and proved his journalistic abilities. Lino Vella, a long-time supporter of our efforts, played a crucial role in making this dream a reality. George was a regular and long-standing contributor to The Maltese Herald in which he commented on a variety of topics, often controversial but always refreshing and stimulating. He also contributed to Lil Hutna a series of articles on the history of Maltese migration to Australia. One little-known contribution of George was in the welfare field where in the late forties, together with a number of Maltese vintage pioneers, he gave a voluntary information and referral service to new arrivals at CUSA House. In those early years, the floodgates were wide open and organised welfare service delivery was unheard of.
