Gilles, Herbert Michael (10.9.1921-)Professor of tropical medicineBorn at Port Said, Egypt, Gilles was educated at St Edward's College and the RUM where he qualified MD (19461). He fur thered his education at Oxford qualifying M.Sc (1951) and FRCP (1969). He was appointed lecturer at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (1958) an professor of tropical medicine (1976-1986). He also served as dean to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (1978-83). He was appointed emeritus professor after his retirement in 1986. He has also served as visiting professor at the UM since 1990. Gilles has contributed significantly in his field, publishing over 150 papers in scientific journals besides writing a number of books.
