Gatt, Stephen P. (1952-)Director, Department of AnaesthesiaEducated at St Aloysius College and the Royal University of Malta, Gatt qualified MD in 1975, his LRCP from the Royal College of Physicians of London and MRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He completed his internship, residency and registrarship at St Luke's Hospital, Malta and the Parramatta, St Vincent's and Prince of Wales, Prince Henry Hospitals in Sydney. Gatt received the Fellowships in Anaesthesia (FFARACS and FANZCA) in 1973 and in Intensive Care (FFIC, ANZCA) in 1993. He was an instructor in Anaesthesia at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston between 1983. He then became Director of Anaesthesia at the Royal Hospital for Women, Paddington and Lecturer, University of New South Wales in 1985. Gatt was appointed Head of the Division of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and Director of the Acute Services Programme of the Prince of Wales, Sydney Children's Prince Henry and Royal South Sydney Hospitals. The Division encompasses many departments including anaesthesia and intensive care units at POW and PHH and paediatric anaesthesia at SCH and also hyperbaric medicine, perioperative, pain, cardiothoracic and neurosurgical anaesthesia and recovery and resuscitation service. For 12 years he has been the Director of Anaesthesia and Acute Care at the Royal Hospital for Women and he is now a Senior Staff Specialist at the same hospital. He is the senior lecturer in Anaesthesia at the University of New South Wales. Gatt has received several awards including the Griffiths Gold Medal in Surgery, the Cachia Zammit Prize in Forensic Medicine, the Warrant of the President of the Republic of Malta, the Matthew Spence Medal in Intensive Care, and in 1997 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Gatt is the author of over 85 original articles and book chapters and has given over 120 keynote addresses and visiting professor or guest lectureships both nationally and internationally. He is the Editor-in-Chief and principal author of the International Hypertextbook of Regional Anaesthesia for Obstetrics. He is a reviewer for Drugs and Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and holds office in over sixty committees. He is the chairman of the Board of the St. Dominic's Village. Dr Gatt's main research interests lie in obstetric and gynaecologic anaesthesia and include criteria for difficult intubation, street fitness following day surgery anaesthesia, preeclampsia-eclampsia, local anaesthesia efficacy and safety and regional anaesthesia techniques. Gatt who resides in Kensington, New South Wales, Australia, is married to Alice Dingli and they have four children, Ian, Andrea, Kristina and Emma.
