Doublet, Joseph (1901-)BenefactorBorn in Msida, Malta. He left Malta for New York in 1920 aged 19 yrs, by which time he had fought in Greece during World War I. He worked with the Pennsylvania Railroad for 45 years. During the depression years following 1929 he helped hundred of compatriots find jobs in New York area. Overall he has sponsored close to 2,000 Maltese emigrants to the U.S.A. He was very much involved with the Maltese community in America. He founded the Malta Society of New York (1920s) and later helped organise the Maltese Benevolent Society. He began the Maltese Journal in 1935s and it lasted 12 years. He was also involved with The Malta War Relief, The Malta Art and Industry Exhibtions, and several other activities. He tried hard to set up a "Grand Council of Maltese Associations of North America" which held its first meeting in Toronto in 1946. He was guest lecturer at schols colleges and on U.S. and Canadian Radio stations. Mr Doublet was also a magician.
