Darmanin, Peter (6.4.1942-)Assistant Secretary General, PNBorn at Tarxien, Darmanin received his education at St Aloysius College, and the Dockyard Technical School. After working for some years as a shipwright at the dockyard, he studied for the priesthood with the MSSP. He graduated in philosophy and theology at St Mark's philosophical and theological college, Rabat. He travelled in America, Canada, Australia, and Europe. In 1976 Darmanin migrated to Australia and, after receiving a dispensation from the priesthood, he became the first Maltese probation and parole officer in NSW. He was advisor on ethnic matters to the premier of NSW, and the first Maltese mediator in the NSW community justice centres, and an official translator and interpreter with the ethnic affairs commission of NSW and justice of the peace. Darmanin was also president, Maltese Welfare Group; founder-member and secretary of the Maltese Group for Anti Discrimination; member, Maltese Community Council of NSW; and founder-member and PRO of St Dominic's Retirement Village m Blacktown, NSW. He was also the representative of the PN in Australia, founder and first chairman of the PN emigrants' secretariiat. He was editor of the bilingual monthly magazine Malta, and of Is-Sliem for Maltese senior citizens in NSW and member of the editorial board of The Maltese Cross. in 1988 Darmanin returned to Malta and joined the PN information office. He is presi dent of the Rabat PN sectional committee; member, general council (since 1990); -sistant treasurer (1992); and -ember, administrative council. In 1994 he was elected assistant secretary general. Darmanin was a government advisor on migrant a its (1987-96), se tary and vice-chairman of the commission for the Maltese Living Abroad, and director of the Secretariat for Maltese Living Abroad.
