Cuschieri, Professor Sir Alfred (1938-)

Professor of Surgery

Sir Alfred Cuschieri MD.MD(Hon), Chm, FRCSEd., FRCSEng, FRCPSGlas(Hon), FRCSI(Hon), F Med Sci, FIBiol is currently Professor of Surgery and Head of Department of Surgery and Molecular Oncology, University of Dundee.

He obtained his medical qualification from the Unviversity of Malta and continued his postgraduate studies at the University of Liverpool.

Sir Alfred has become a world-wide authority on Minimal Access Surgery. He has been Director of the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit of Scotland (since 1992).

He has held several national (UK) and international appointments, including President, British Association of Surgical Oncology, 1984 -1986, President, European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons, 1995-1997, President, International Hepatobiliary pancreatic association, 1992-3, and President European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons, 1995-1997

He has received many awards, including: the Moynihan prize/medal - Association. of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland - 1973, the University of Helsinki, Gold Medal - 1989, the Scandinavian Society of Gastroenterology, Gold Medal - 1990, the Scott-Heron Medal, Royal Victoria Hospital, Queen's University of Belfast, 1995, the Ernest Miles medal, 1996, the Sir John Marnock Medal - University of Aberdeen, 1997, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Gold Medal, 1997. He was made Knight Bachelor by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 1998 and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh - 1998.

Sir Alfred has also had several editorial appointments, including editor of Journal of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, 1987 - 1997. Surgical Endoscopy, 1992 -, and Seminars in Laparoscopic Surgery, 1993 -.

He has held several visiting professorships at universities around the world, including the University of California, Utah, New York, Dublin, Hong Kong, Cape Town, Pisa, and Bologna. He is examiner in surgery at a number of universities in UK and Europe

Sir Alfred has published over 350 research papers and published several monographs on topics relating to surgical procedures.
