Cumbo, Spiridione Richard (2.3.1948-)

Journalist

Born in Sliema, Cumbo emigrated with his parents to Toronto in 1951. He was educated at Humberside Collegiate Institute, the Central Technical School of Art, and the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto.

Cumbo has had a long-lasting interest in the Maltese community in Toronto. He has served on the executive committee of the Maltese-Canadian Society of Toronto Inc. and of the Maltese Canadian Federation Inc. He was elected president of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, St Pius X Church Conference, Toronto (1992).

Cumbo was appointed on the Ontario Advisory Council for Multiculturalism and Citizenship (1979-86) and on the Toronto Historical Board (1981-83). He was a council member on the National Council of Welfare for six yars and a founding member of the Malta Language and Culture Group (now the Society of Mediterranean Studies, University of Toronto).

Cumbo is a knight of the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem, Grand Priory of Canada (1975). He is the recipient of the Ontario Volunteer Service Award (1984), the Ontario Bicentennial Award for Humanitarian Endeavours (1984), and the Ontario Gold Bi-Centennial Medal (1984). The National Public Archives of Canada in Ottawa has a section called the 'Richard S. Cumbo Collection'.

Cumbo is a member of the Canadian Ethnic Journalist and Writers Club (1980). He has published several articles in journals in Canada, Malta, and Australia, and edited a publication Maltese in Canada. He was awarded the Canadian Ethnic Journalist Award (1991).

Cumbo is married to Maria-Magdalene Depares-Valenzia and they have two daughters, Charlene and Alicia.
