Caruana, Mark (18.6.1946-)AuthorBorn in Sliema, Caruana was educated at StJoseph's Secondary Technical School, PaolaHe obtained a library assistant's certificatefrom the City & Guilds of London Institute(1969) and was employed as library assistant at.the RUM (1967-69).Caruana emigrated to Sydney, Australia in Jaunuary 1973 and was employed as library assistant at Macquary University (NSW) andlater at Blacktown City (NSW). He was- then employed as migrant welfare officer with the department of immigration & ethnic affairs, assisting migrants and refugees with information and settlement advice (1976-84) and as district officer (multicultural) with the department of community services as a child protection worker (1984-89). He then joined the NSW department of school education as a community liaison officer with the aim of encouraging students to continue their education to Year 12 (1989-92). Since 1992 he has been regional community liaison officer (multicultural). He has also been acting as justice of the peace since 1976. Caruana has published widely on topicsrelating to the oral history of migrants in Australia. He has recorded on cassette and video in English and Maltese over 80 oral history interviews with migrants from the Maltese islands who went to Australia in 1912-1939. His publications include oral History: A practical guide based Maltese Migration and Settlement in Australia (1993, with Dr B. York), Afghans in Western Sydney (1994); Filipinos in Western Sydney (1 993), and Countries and languages a guide for staff in schools (1992).
