Carmelo Caruana (1914-1985)
Mr Caruana joined the teaching Order de la Salle Brothers when he was 21 hears, and stayed with them for eleven years, teaching various subjects. He set up a league for the dissemination of the Maltese language in 1943 ( Xirka tal-Malti ghat-Tfal).
He left for Canada with his wife Beatrix and their daughters on July 1955 when he was 41 years old. He continued is teaching profession in Toronto. In 1962 he was appointed principal of Corpus Christi School.
In 1950 he as chosen as the official representative of the Emigrants Commission based in Malta.
He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Humanities (Hons. Cause) by the Chartered Philatelic College of London, Ontario.
He was a regular contributor to Maltese journals like Lil Hutna, The Malta Star, and The Malta News, and in 1969 he became the editor of The Maltese Forum, a bilingual review of cultural, social , educational, historical, and ecumenical information which, however, had to stop for some time because of lack of funds.
Mr Caruana made his mark as a teacher, journalist and leader of the Maltese community in Canada.
