Calleja, Joseph (23.9.1919-)Social WorkerBorn at Paola, Calleja was educated at St Paul's School, the Archbishop's Seminary, the UM, and Michigan State University. Calleja joined the British civil service as an executive director and later moved to a travel agency as executive vice-president of sales. He was consul-general for Costa Rica (1960), founder-president of The Maltese Friendship League, USA, and secretary-general of the Council of Maltese American Organizations of Michigan, USA. He was President Johnson's personal representative at Malta's Independence celebrations and special US ambassador in 1964. Calleja has served as social counsellor of the Malta Emigration Commission and as chairman of the US desk at the Emigrants Commission. He was also founder and honorary life president of the Maltese American Association. He has published several booklets about religious themes. Calleja married Pauline Ascolese in 1959.
