Bugeja, MichaelProfessor of JournalismMichael Bugeja is a first generation American whose parents, Michael Carl Bugeja (Gozo) and Josephine Apap (Marsa), emigrated to New Jersey in the 1930s. Dr. Bugeja's heritage has remained special to him. His acclaimed short stories and poems often are set in Malta. In 1990 he won a coveted individual National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in fiction with a story about a Maltese nun. You can read some of his poems in English and Maltese either here or here. In addition to being a writer, Dr. Bugeja is special assistant to President Robert Glidden at Ohio University, founder of character-education.com, and designer of the award-winning character development program, Your PATH at Ohio, emphasizing personal accountability, trust, and honor. Dr. Bugeja is on the Editorial Board of the peer review Journal of College and Character, which features a monthly column by him on "Teaching and Practices in Character Education." A frequent guest columnist for Scripps Howard News Service and other media outlets, Dr. Bugeja's commentaries on ethics and character education have been featured in Chronicle of Higher Education, Newsday, The American Journalism Review, Rocky Mountain News, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Columbus Dispatch, Editor & Publisher, The Quill, CBS radio, NPR "Mark of Excellence," and Fox News Network. Dr. Bugeja is also a professor of Journalism at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism where he teaches ethics and writing. His creative work has appeared in hundreds of magazines, including Harper's, Poetry, and Kenyon Review. He has written 18 books, including Living Ethics and Guide to Writing Magazine Nonfiction (both by Allyn & Bacon), and has won awards and/or grants from both the National Endowment for the Arts and for the Humanities, Ohio Arts Council, and many others, and is listed in Marquis' Who's Who in America (2000 edition). He is on the Advisory Board of Writer's Digest, contributing editor of Writer on Line, and honorary chancellor of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. His teaching honors include two University Professorship Awards (Ohio University) and an AMOCO Outstanding Teacher Award (Oklahoma State University), all bestowed by the student bodies of those institutions, and a Best Practices Award by the Center for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Bugeja holds a bachelor's degree in German, a master's in mass communication, and a doctorate in English. His hobbies include tree-planting, jogging, rollerblading, and hiking with Alaskan dogs--a Malamute and Husky. He lives in Athens, Ohio, with his spouse Diane and their two children.
