Bugeja, George (23.4.1925-)Justice of the PeaceBorn in Marsa, Bugeja was educated at the Seraphic School in Floriana and St Cyril College, St Julians, where he graduated probatus cum laude. In 1948 he joined the teaching staff at Stella Maris College, Gzira. Bugeja migrated to Sydney, Australia in 1950 where he was employed first in the taxation department and later as staff member of Qantas (1951-85). He held positions as bilinguist teacher with the education department, University Branch (1953) and official interpreter at the civil and criminal courts (1953). Bugeja served as executive officer of various Maltese organizations and dedicated most of his spare time to social and welfare work. He was secretary to the Sea-Farers Association (1948). In 1952 he was appointed justice of the peace by the governor of New South Wales. He was founder member of the Maltese Guild of Australia for more than 20 years, first as general secretary and then as president and chairman. In 1967 he was invested knight of the Order of St John by Sir Norman Cardinal Gilroy at St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. In 1991 he received the Maltese Community Service Award from the Maltese Community Council of NSW in recognition of outstanding service to the Maltese community.
