Abela, Seraphin (7.11.1926-)Carmelite historianAbela was born in Valletta and studied at the Lyceum and St Cyril College, the Carmelite college in St Julians. He entered the Carmelite order in 1944 and ordained priest in 1950. Five years later Abela began his missionary work with the Maltese Carmelites in Latin America. He served in Peru and Bolivia and was Prior and parish priest in Tingo, Arequipa, Peru (1961-64). Whilst in Peru, he obtained a Diploma de Adiestramiento en Cooperativas de Credito. Abela had to return to his native country after ten years owing to illness. Abela has written Hidma Misiunarja mill-Karmelitani Maltin - Grajja ta' l-Ewwel Hamsa u Ghoxrin Sena fl-Amerika t'Isfel (1974), L-Ewwel Karmelitani f'Malta u l-Ewwel Knisja u Kunvent Taghhom il-Lunzjata l-Qadima (1976), Il-Karmelitani fl-Imdina, 1659-1994 (1994), and The Centenary of the Province Of Malta (1993). He is also the author of Cuschieri: Poeta tal-Madonna u tal-Kelma Maltija (1967). Abela is the founder and first president of the Carmelite Missionary Unit, later known as Carmelite Students, Missionary Guild. He is also promoter and member of the commission for the rehabilitation of Il-Lunzjata, the first Carmelite convent outside Rabat, Malta.
