Note In 1996 there has been a considerable drop (15.7%)in usage of Maltese at home (Language shift), which in turn represents a drop of 10.9% from the 1986 Census. The increase in language usage between 1976 and 1986 represents 're-vitalisation ' as discussed in text, plus, to a smaller degree, an increase due to further immigration.
