7.5 Lung CancerMaltese males tend to suffer from respiratory disorders much more than the average S. European (SMRS: Maltese 86, Italians 42, Greeks 23, S.Europe 40), but less than the Australia-born as a whole (100) Young 1986, p 86) The mortality from lung cancer in Maltese males (SMR: 137) is much higher than that of other S. European, (e.g. Italian 95, Yugoslav 99, S. Europe 92), and is comparable with the rate for British males (125). There is no doubt that the high incidence of cancer in Maltese males is related to the high incidence of cigarette smoking, perhaps compounded by inhalation of dusts and fumes that some workers would be exposed to.
