5.5 Tertiary EducationOne gets the impression that the Maltese in Australia are not terribly impressed with a tertiary education, and neither parents nor students are inclined to give it much importance. The proportion of Maltese-born possessing a higher qualification (diploma or higher) is low, with little variation between first and second generation, being about 2% for the 1981 Census and nearly 6% in the 1986 census. Although this seems like a considerable improvement, particularly in the case of females, where there is a 6-fold increase, it does not compare favorably with the average Australian or South European-born population.
