4.10 Attitudes to WorkThere are no studies relating to the attitudes of Maltese to their work. The recent survey by OMA (1989) is therefore interesting in comparing Maltese with other workers. While, as one would expect, good pay and job security are aspects of work sought after by all respondents, other job-related aspects are not so important for the Maltese worker. For instance, the proportion of Maltese respondents who regarded "opportunity for initiative" as important was only 37%, or almost half that of the general or NESB sample (76% and 64% respectively). Likewise, only 37% of Maltese interviewed considered that "job responsibility" was important to them. Finally, it is also worth noting that Maltese workers are staunch unionists. Over 72% belonged to a trade union (compared to 44% in the general sample and 62% in the NESB sample ( OMA 1989). This is not entirely due to the fact they work in occupations where belonging to a union is compulsory, because over 66% per cent said that they would belong to a union anyway even if they did not have to.
