"(See Price, 1954, p 13) The history of Malta is one of colonization by one power after another. Since Roman times, dating from 218 HC when the Carthaginians lost the 2nd Punic War, the documented history shows a succession of rulers which involved in turn the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Normans, the Spanish, Knights of St John, the French, and finally the British (Table 1.1). Malta was a British colony for 150 odd years from the time when the British Navy was invited to help oust Napoleon in 1798 until Independence in 1964. The last British serviceman left Malta in 1979.
