Acquisition Of Maltese Citizenship Through Marriage - Q & A

Question No 20

I am a British citizen who married a citizen of Malta four (4) years ago. Unfortunately my husband died last year after three years of marriage. In view of the recent amendments to the citizenship laws and as I would like to apply for Maltese citizenship in order to hold dual citizenship, could you please confirm whether I am eligible to do so.

The Law, as amended, now stipulates that the foreign widow of a citizen of Malta, would be eligible to apply for Maltese citizenship when five years would have elapsed from the date of marriage and as long as she was still living with her husband at the time of his demise. In your case, therefore, you would be eligible to apply for Maltese citizenship in a year's time.
