Acquisition Of Maltese Citizenship By Birth - Q & A

Question No 25

I was born in Malta in 1948 of parents both born in Malta. In 1970 I married a British citizen and went to live with my husband in the United Kingdom. I have three children, all born in the United Kingdom, who are now 28, 24 and 20 years old. I am still a citizen of Malta. Is it true that my children, following changes to the Maltese Citizenship law, can become citizens of Malta?

Yes, your assumption is correct. If a person was born abroad between the 21 September 1964 and August 1989 and his/her mother was a citizen of Malta at the time of his/her birth, then that person, irrespective of where he/she is residing, can apply to be registered as a citizen of Malta and he/she would not be required to renounce his/her current citizenship.
