Abandoned New-borns - Q & A

Question No 30

A child was found abandoned in Malta in 1992 and is presently being brought up by the Sisters of Charity. On the 30 March 2000 it was conclusively established that the child's parents are British citizens and consequently the child possesses British citizenship. Does this mean that he has now ceased to be a citizen of Malta?

Yes. The relative legislation stipulates that the person concerned shall be deemed to be a citizen of Malta as long as he has no claim to any other citizenship. Once it has been established that he is a British citizen, then he is considered never to have been a citizen of Malta..
