Assessment of Isonomy Index

The degree of isonomy was assessed using the methods developed by Barrai et al (1996).

The value of alpha reflects the degree of frequency of surnames, and therefore could reflect degree of inbreeding. A high alpha value would then be expected to correlate directly with degree of inbreeding.

The largest values of alpha are found in the smaller villages, particularly Ghasri, Fontana, Sannat, San Lawrenz. (Ghasri appears to be very much the odd village with disproportionately high alpha value). The smallest values are found in Rabat.

The sum total of shared surnames for each locality is given in table 3.6 (Column X). Rabat has the greatest degree of sharing ( x = 22), while for Sannat the figure is 7.

Table 3.6: Surname Analysis: Gozo localities

The parameters, alpha, isonomy (I) and X are defined following Barrai et al 1996 - see above). N refers to the number of surnames analysed in each locality; this is expressed also as a percentage of the total population (%)

Regression analysis shows that there is correlation between the size of the population analysed and alpha (R2 = -0.8654), and X (table 4) (R2 = -.9470). Likewise there is correlation between alpha and X (R2 =.6892).
