Sharing of Surnames by the various localitiesIt was of some interest to determine the degree of sharing of the more common surnames by the various localities in Gozo. For this purpose, the 6 most common surnames, (accounting for 30 - 50 percent of the total surnames analysed in each locality) were analysed to determine how frequently the same surname was present in each locality. Table 3.4 shows the surnames most often shared by the various localities. Vella is found in the top 6 surnames in all localities (except Xaghra). Likewise, Attard is found in the top 6 most frequent surnames in five localities. A number of other surnames make the top six in 3 localities. To note that while Rabat shares 3 common surnames with two villages, (Ghasri, Zebbug), the surnames involved are different, and only the ubiquitous Vella is shared between them Finally, table 3.5 shows the surnames that are found in each locality more commonly than expected, based on the size of the population. In some instances, surnames are up to 19 times more common than expected (e.g. Piscopo in San Lawrenz). These may happen also to be common surnames. For instance, Cini forms 17 % of the Zebbug population, and Grech 13 % of the Kercem population. The first 3 surnames in each locality which are present more frequently than expected on the basis of the size of the population are given. The column labelled O-E% refers to the difference between the observed and expected numbers (percent), as defined under materials and methods. It is to be noted that these are not necessarily the most common surnames (as given in tables above). Only surnames with an observed frequency greater than 20 are included here. Frequency refers to the proportion of a particular surname as a proportion of the total population in the locality. Relative Frequency refers to the proportion of the particular surname to the total population with that surname in Gozo.
