Zarb obtained his BA and MA degrees from University and in 1975 he was award ed an honorary LL.D. He won the school's Outstanding scholar award for 1974 and in 1976 Quincy College conferred upon him an honorary doctorate in conservation.

Zarb began his career with Godbody & Co in 1962 where he acquired considerable experience in securities. He served as assistant secretary of labour (1971-72) And as associate director of the office of management and budget (1972-73).

Since 1978 Zarb has been a senior partner of Lazard Freres & Co. with responsibilities in international and domestic investment banking.

Zarb is a member of the board of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) and serves on the board of the council for the US and Italy, He is a member of the board of Primerica Corporation, a governor of the American Stock Exchange, a member of the board of trustees of the Gerald R. Ford Foundation, and was chairman of the board of trustees of Hofstra University, where he still serves as a member of the board.
