My story

Author: Natalie Azzopardi

I'm here to share my story, about my past and future dreams,
Education, unemployment - for what it's worth and what it seems:
The barriers I've had to face, the problems that surround,
And the advice that I've been given from a Maltese family background.

We are all brought up differently, different styles, a different passion
Although my parents were both born in Australia, they somewhat resemble the Maltese fashion.
But although the times are changing and years go by so fast,
The way our parents bring us up - does also resemble their past.
This was something I'd never thought to compare, the way I was brought up was all I knew, Though now when I ask my Maltese friends, they say "I was brought up like that too".

I'm sure all Maltese parents and grandparents have at times advised in a way
Where they always begin with the sentence, "Well it wasn't like that in our day"
And they tell us how they really worked hard and how they were brought up in life,
How it wasn't like it is today and how they rarely got into strife.
They tell us about all their responsibilities and how they survived a complication,
But the one thing that they always stressed - is the importance of 'education'
And this was the way I was taught, all the years I went through school:
To study hard and give it our best was more or less our family rule.

As a child I always loved drama, an actress I wanted to be,
And this was the path I chose to take after completing my VCE.
I knew it was a hard field to tackle, but to try my best was the way I was taught;
My parents never pushed me to be someone else and always gave me their full support.

In 1994 I began at Victoria University to follow up what I wanted to be,
And in 1996 completed my course and received my Performance Studies Degree
Knowing how hard the competition was, especially in the Performing work force,
Whilst studying at Uni I also completed a part-time massage course.

After completing my degree, people asked me the question, "So, where do you go from here?"
And I found I asked myself the same thing, "Where do I start in the performing career?"
Although I knew it was going to be difficult, the outcome wasn't all that bad,
For, whilst looking around and doing amateur plays, I was fortunate to work for my Dad.
